Final 3: Furniture

We're down to the final 3!
This week the contestants were give the challenge: FURNITURE.

#1 Time Table
THE BEGINNING:
-Purchased very damaged, plain end table from Goodwill.
-Sanded down all the finish and gouges.

THE MIDDLE:

  • Crafted my own clock from a shadow box, a clock kit, and a few embellishments.
  • Cut a hole in the table, and mounted the shadow box flush to table's surface.
  • A few coats of paint...
  • Glued individual tiles to sides of table for added interest.
THE END:
Find a new home for this one-of-a-kind piece of furniture!!!

#2 Build Your Own Outdoor Furniture
I got tired of sitting on my empty deck watching the kids play in the water. So I made a new rule, "No swimming 'til I can afford the $4,000 Pottery Barn furniture set that I want." It seemed bit extreme, however, since that rule would mean the kids would never swim again. I decided to get creative.

I needed to take my poolside deck from....

I enlisted some kid helpers, hauled out the power tools, dug through the pile of old wood and got to work. It was blood, sweat and tears (OK, no blood or tears, but there was enough sweat to make up for it) but we did it. Leftover wood and paint, old metal pieces, some coffee bean burlap sacks, pillows I wasn't using, lots of hammering and sewing and voila!
Summer just got sweeter.

The only thing I had to buy was the outdoor fabric and foam for the cushions....everything else was junk I already owned.

Now I'm wandering around the house begging the kids to go swimming so I can sit out there.

It's better than my Pottery Barn inspiration because it fits my space exactly, I got just the style and colors I wanted and it cost 95% less!

If you need me, I'll be out by the pool.

#3 Fleur De Lis Table
One day, on the side of the road, I found the perfect table base
and picnic table top to make a great coffee table...

I attached the two pieces with some wood scraps and screws, then spray painted the entire table with a flat gray paint. On the top
I hand-painted a fleur de lis design in the center and a wreath encircling the edge.

I heavily distressed the top with sandpaper and a sander, then gave the whole table a coat of Polycrylic to protect the finish...

The perfect little table for my deck!

  4. I am a sewing person so furniture projects always seem a little daunting to me. HOWEVER, the 3 projects up this week are very inspirational and are prompting me to search for furniture as well as handbags to redo and upcycle. Great job bloggers! Tough choice again this week!
